The Revisionist Historiography

In 1968, with the world in turmoil, the massacre of demonstrating college students by government troops led to another interpretation of the Revolution.  The revisionists see the Revolution as a step back from a modern state.  The PRI maintains its power through political machines; favors are traded for votes.

Though Diaz was a dictator at least his views were modern.  Under his tutelage, Mexico would have evolved as a modern state.  The Revolution reversed this rise to modernity.   Because the Revolutionaries won and therefore wrote the history of the Revolution, the villains were not as described and the heroes were not quite as heroic.

Are there any other examples of dictators leading countries into the modern era?   Is the establishment of  a political machine for the working class of benefit to a modern industrial country?
